What has happened so far on the program?

Starting weight/body fat approximately 80kg/12%; post-cut 72.5kg/6%.

I haven’t gained as much muscle mass as I would like thus far, but that isn’t the fault of the program. My numbers on the big lifts have been going steadily up, especially deadlifting (which I have never really done with any regularity prior to starting BLS) and squat.

What, if anything, almost kept you from buying the book or starting the program?

Honestly I had no hesitation when it came to purchasing the book, the price-point is incredibly generous and the ease of having the online Kindle version made it a no-brainer. I only wish I had discovered it 5 years ago when I restarted training.

What do you like most about the program?

I like the simplicity of it, there isn’t any need to get bogged down in complicated set schemes, and I also much prefer low reps with high weights to the often frenetic high rep, short rest-times of the traditional “hypertrophy” style workouts.

How does this program compare with others you’ve tried?

For me the main paradigm shift that came from the BLS program was the approach to nutrition. It provides a clear and easy to follow guide to counting macros etc… I knew the main principles about bodybuilding nutrition (Protein/carb/fat ratios etc…) and I had attempted in the past to count calories, however this ultimately devolved into a fastidious mathematical exercise.

Counting macros however is far simpler, and it also provides a very pragmatic element when it comes to eye-balling macros of meals when eating out so you can stick (within a reasonable margin of error) to your numbers for the day. Also the simple formulae for bulking/cutting macros allowing you to add muscle without gaining too much gratuitous fat or shed fat as efficiently as possible, respectively was a game-changer.

Additionally, I’m very grateful to and impressed by Mike himself. He has a very hands-on and approachable ethos that helps you stay the course through any moments of doubt, either through email contact or through the regular articles on the website.

How has what you’ve achieved with your body changed other areas of your life?

I’m more confident when it comes to taking my shirt off on holiday or when kicking a football around.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

I suppose ultimately a key element to this whole game is expectation management. If you want to look like Rich Piana within a year, then ultimately you’re always going to be disappointed and risk falling off the path (and don’t get me wrong most of us, if not all of us have those moments).

However if you are happy to enjoy the process as much as the results and leave your ego at the door, then this is a truly enjoyable program that will deliver the optimal results in as fast a time-frame as is naturally possible, emphasis on natural.
