Something to Love About Fitness: You Can’t Slide By on Bullshit

One of the things I love about fitness is you can’t slide by on bullshit.

It’s one of those special things in life that you can’t buy, steal, or fake. There aren’t any rewards for complaining or failing, and it doesn’t care about your opinions or feelings.

You have to give something to get something.

It’s called “working out,” after all, and for a good reason. You either do the work, and transform your body, or you don’t.

This is a valuable lesson to learn, I think, because it’s a metaphor for something bigger.

No matter what you’re facing in life, you have two choices: you can put in the work, or get put in your place.

I think that nature smiles at the economic, political, and social institutions that we erect to try to change this rule, and escape its certitude.

Well, let’s not forget that not so long ago, our forebears had to chase, fight, and kill just to survive.

They expected hardship.

They were willing to face the worst.

They embraced the fact that the universe, in all its apparent tranquility, is a carefully balanced chaos of forces that we barely understand.

We, on the other hand, have it easy. And that makes it easy to go soft, to lose perspective, and be lulled into idleness, inertia, and irresponsibility.

I like to think that working out is something of an inoculation against this.

A tribute to the primacy of work.

A reminder that the same power you muster to change your body can also be harnessed to change your life.

    id like to put this on my ig bio. you cant slide by on bullshit and print it on my shirt hehe. love your work

    question pls: i lose sleep over excitement on working out. sometimes i stay up thinking about my coming sets. i have insomnia too so my sleeping is bad. how detrimental is lack of sleep to developibg muscles.

    Mike, you can slide by on bullshit. It’s called anabolic steroids =(.

      Nope. Still not a free ticket by any means. I’ve got a friend who takes pretty legit SARMs (Ostarine) and has done cycles of steroids in the past and you know what? I’m still running circles around his candy ass in the gym and my results are in my opinion way better than his. The difference? His diet and work ethic are absolutely horrible. Yeah he’s big but he’s not cut and defined like me.

    • You might be surprised how little most people on drugs get out of them, both in terms of their physiques and performance.

      Most of the guys and gals on drugs that look great and put up serious numbers in the gym have to work just as hard as us natties, they just get more out of it…

      Steriods aren’t magic, if your training and diet aren’t decent you wont get results. Usually the guys going throught the trouble and expense of taking them are getting results because they are super motivated to get the most out of them.

    …and Christopher… re your steroid comment… you missed the point. You cant slide by on bullshit. Steroids, credit cards… all manner of bullshit catches up with you at some point.

    So many people I see try to slide by on bullshit. They spend more time bullshitting with their buddies, texting or dicking with the weights. Lift a weight here or there and call it good.
