What has happened so far on the program?

A lot has happened since reading Mike’s books and choosing a cutting program. My initial goal was only to lose fat. I wasn’t concerned so much with how much weight I lost or even how much weight I could lift. Specifically, I was tired of having fat around my waist, “love handles”, and lower back.

I figured if I could just get rid of that I would be happy. However, here are some other results:

My weight went from 201 lbs to 184 lbs.
My waist from 37″ to 33″.
My body fat from 21% to 10%.

That means I went from 159 lbs of lean muscle and 42 lbs of fat to 166 lbs of lean muscle and 18 lbs of fat!!

This was measured at a wellness center where I work by a physician’s assistant. I’m still getting stronger each week in my workouts. On average, my biggest movements (bench press, squat, deadlift, military press) have gone up 30% and I’m not even pushing myself to lift heavy because I don’t want to re-injure myself. I have to keep going up because the weight is getting easier to lift as I get stronger.

What, if anything, almost kept you from buying the book or starting the program?

I’ve tried other programs in the past and they were either too difficult to follow or not long term sustainable. Also, I have injuries that nag me and I was concerned what type of exercises I would be able to do without aggravating or re-injuring myself.

I have 3 herniated discs in my lower back (L4, L5, and S1), arthritis in my knees, and I’ve had a hernia repair. I can’t do programs or movements that are too intense or too high impact without running the risk of injury. Its one thing if I’m injured on the job fighting fires, but another thing if I’m injured in the weight room.

What do you like most about the program?

I like everything about the program! It is easier to follow than other programs and the results are both faster and better than I expected!

Mike takes all the guesswork out of what to exercise, when, how many sets, reps, etc. He also takes all the guesswork out of how much to eat, what types of foods to eat, and when to eat.

How does this program compare with others you’ve tried?

This program is by far better than any other program I’ve tried (and I’ve tried a bunch of them). Nothing is confusing or hard to follow. It is all straight forward and long term sustainable (which is what I like). This isn’t a diet but a lifestyle that anyone can follow.

I love the workouts because they are back to basics in some aspects yet applicable to even the most advanced weightlifter. I see way too many people working out in the gym wasting their time either doing the wrong movements or doing the correct movements with the wrong form. What’s worse, is when people are killing themselves in the gym trying the latest “craze” in the fitness industry yet aren’t being guided at all in the nutritional aspect.

The food choices we make are 70-80% of how we are going look. You can’t out perform your poor eating habits (and believe me I tried for years before it finally caught up and passed me by). Mike addresses every aspect of a healthy lifestyle (workouts, nutrition, sleep, vitamins, supplements, etc.).

How has what you’ve achieved with your body changed other areas of your life?

Being more physically fit helps in every aspect of life. It helps at work to stay focused and get the job done. It helps at home to take care of what you have been blessed with and to get out and play, hike, bike, swim, etc., with the family. I need to keep up with my wife and our three elementary aged kiddos!

It helps me spiritually as well to not only stay focused but also help out the church when its time to get out of the pew to get your hands dirty and help people that are truly in need of assistance.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

I’d like to tell people that if I can do it anyone can do it. Don’t worry about trying to lift crazy amounts of weight in a short amount of time. This isn’t a crash diet or exercise program. This is a sustainable way of life.

Don’t worry about getting too big or too small. Mike has programs available to suit any sort of goal that you are trying to achieve.

And remember, you can’t out perform your poor food choices forever! I tried and failed! Now that I’m making better food choices I feel so much better and my body responds better to any situation I find myself in (responding to emergencies on duty at the fire department or playing basketball with my kids).

Plus, the program is just plain easy and fun to follow, enjoy the journey!
